Several news outlets, including the UK’s Daily Mail, Space.com, and MSNBC, have reported on a recent YouTube video showing three unidentified lights in a triangle formation, caught on night-vision, cruising across the California sky. The first story on the video comes from a website called Ghost Theory. Javier Ortega posted the videos on his site on May 29 stating that he had been notified of the video by the poster, KevinMC360, who had also sent Ortega night-vision UFO videos a year ago.
It seems that, like other night-sky UFO watchers, Kevin regularly searches the sky with his night-vision technology to try to capture UFOs. Last year, the English tabloid, The Sun, created a bit of a stir with a similar night-vision video, claiming it to be from Dublin, Ireland. It was actually a video from Fremont, CA taken in 2008. Like Kevin’s video it shows objects in a triangular formation traveling together, possibly lights from one craft.
In UFO circles, the most well-known night-vision UFO videographer is a man named Ed Grimsley. He films out of San Diego, and his efforts were recently highlighted in a news piece on MSNBC’s website. Although many of Grimsley’s videos are interesting, he has an even more unique theory about what he is capturing. He believes he is videotaping space battles going on over our heads on a regular basis. He thinks they might be between good aliens who are trying to protect us from bad ones that want to invade our planet.
The MSNBC story featured the opinion of Robert Sheaffer, a member of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. He said that what Grimsley was capturing were artifacts from the night-vision technology and “birds or bats, or faint satellites in earth orbit.” While it may be difficult to understand why his videos would be interpreted as space battles, it is clear that some of the objects don’t fit the explanations Sheaffer proposed. For instance in one case an object is flying straight, slows down, and returns the same direction it came from. I can see how, although the movement doesn’t appear bird like, perhaps it could be a bird. However, another object is completely still and then begins to move. That one is a bit more difficult to explain.
The lights in formation captured in California are even more mysterious. An MSNBC article by Benjamin Radford about the most recent video, pokes holes at the filmmaker’s assumption that the objects were invisible because his wife could not see them. We use night-vision because we can’t see at night, so if there were birds off in the distance at night, night-vision should be able to capture them although we can’t see them. Luckily, there have also been some night-vision videographers that have filmed birds at night for a comparison.
As we can see in the videos, birds can look a bit mysterious, and fly in formation. However, their formations are usually not perfectly symmetrical like the objects in the Fremont video. As Radford points out, none of this demonstrates a definite conclusion that we are looking at extraterrestrial objects. Secret black projects or unmanned aerial vehicles could be what are truly flying over California at night. Either way, it is an Unidentified Flying Object mystery. We definitely advise watching the heavens and scanning the night sky with your night-vision equipment if you got it. You may be the one to capture the most extraordinary video yet.
