Malaysian astrophysicist Mazlan Othman has been named by the United Nations (U.N.) to be the official “greeter” if extraterrestrials land on Earth. While it may seem odd that such an important role for interplanetary relations would go to an astrophysicist rather than a politician, Othman is currently the director of the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).

The UNOOSA deals with space-related issues and implements policies related to space.

Professor Othman believes that “first contact” with extraterrestrials is more likely now than ever before. While she has reportedly been named as the U.N.’s ambassador to extraterrestrials, she must first receive approval from U.N. scientific advisory committees and the General Assembly.
