I found your stories about "enemy helicopters" over the DMZ in 1968 interesting. I was in the Air Force stationed in DaNang with the 366 AMES. I worked on the radar system that controlled the weapons on the F4-Phantom. In June 1968, our pilots claimed they had downed at least 12 enemy helicopters over the DMZ. Red stars were painted on the sides of the fighters. Pilots met returning pilots on the flightline with champagne and took photos in front of planes with red stars. After about a week, the crew chiefs painted over the stars. One crew chief told me, "It never happened." It obviously was a coverup, but I never knew why? Any ideas?
